This time of year we are inundated with versions of “A Christmas Carol,” on television, in movies and live onstage. Scrooge and his gang are seemingly everywhere.

Believe me when I tell you, no version of “A Christmas Carol “ you’ve seen before can prepare you for Strawberry Theatre Workshop's effective and haunting staging, titled “Fellow Passengers” (the title is taken from a line in the story).

Set on a ship floating through outer space, three actors, dressed like they've done hard time on the Nostromo, play out the familiar story using props, found objects and nearly all of Dickens’ text.

As the story progresses, occasionally lights will flicker, alarms will sound and a small robot will come to life. Director Lamar Legend expertly keeps the show beautifully on course, focusing on the story we’ve all come to see.

The actors play multiple roles, often changing characters so quickly that it can take your breath away. Kiki Abba, Imogen Love and Heather Persinger make for one of the best ensembles I’ve seen in a long while.

Love, in particular, brings a touching honesty to her performance. She has that certain something that makes you believe in each character’s humanity. Her final scene with her fellow passengers is just sublime.

When the show ended and the lights came up, I sat there dumbfounded. What a beautiful, moving, cosmic trip I had just experienced. Do yourself a favor and take the journey. You’ll be thankful you did.

Fellow Passengers, produced by Strawberry Theatre Worksho, runs on stage through December 22 at 12th Ave Arts. For more information, including ticket availability and sales, visit https://www.strawshop.org/.
