Between the Pages - Broadway Nation

This week, we go Between the Pages with author David Armstrong. David has a vast career in theatre, spanning over 45 years as a director, choreographer, artistic director, book writer, producer, educator, and podcaster. His podcast, Broadway Nation, is inspired by a course he teaches at the University of Washington in their school of drama about the history of the Broadway musical. David's work has taken him across the country, but perhaps he's known best locally for his tenure at the 5th Avenue Theatre as Producing Artistic Director and Executive Producer, a time in which the 5th launched 19 new musicals, including 9 that moved to Broadway.

David took some time to sit down with host Greg Heilman to discuss his latest endeavor, a new book aptly titled Broadway Nation: How Immigrant, Jewish, Queer, and Black Artists Invented the Broadway Musical, available now wherever books are sold. David discusses how the book came about, the unique structure of the writing, and his hopes around Broadway Nation's potential. We also chatted about the current political and social climate and how this book is timely in that context.
